Why Getting Attention For Your Message Is TOUGH

There are some unwritten rules to public speaking (whether that’s for the stage, a livestream, or a webinar):

  • Your audience is bombarded with messages with people that want to influence them.
  • Your audience might lie to you (out of love!) because we’re socialized to be agreeable and positive.
  • Your audience has a tendency to seek out information that confirms their existing beliefs.

What does this mean for your speaking? No matter how much applause or how many likes, comments, and “this was great!” you get…you make very few sales on your public speaking events, live streams, and webinars. How does this apply to the talks you deliver in person? You walk off stage and head to the back of the room. People walk by and say ‘thank you’ for delivering a ‘great speech’. But very few people sign up. You’re dumbfounded! 

What went wrong? Being a good speaker is not enough. If you want to inspire your audience and generate new clients and sales from speaking online or offline, then you need to learn how to find the right message for the right market. 

Building this unique, authentic emotional connection with your audience isn’t something you learn from reading some public speaking book, course or ‘webinar template’. It’s much more complex than that.

Over the last two years, I’ve delivered 2 TEDx talks:
TEDxWatts and TEDxChulaVista, with two very different outcomes:

TEDxWatts only received about
25,000 views in a year on Youtube…

…while TEDxChulaVista received over
34,000 views in less than a month.

What was the difference?

The way I prepared and crafted these talks.

For the first talk for TEDxWatts, I certainly delivered a talk I was proud of and the audience certainly enjoyed it.

However, for the second talk for TEDxChulaVista, I went the extra mile to customize my speech for their specific audience. About a month before my actual talk, I learned how Chula Vista Elementary School was one of the main supporters for this event. This insight allowed me to find and share my story about my high school student teaching experience. As a result, I was able to create the unique bond with this audience. They were much more willing to share and promote my talk with everyone in their networks. Right message for the right audience.

It was the same thing when I spoke recently for REMAX as their keynote speaker. I reached out to their staff and asked them about their top challenges. They told me 3 things: high workload, quick market changes, and dealing with rejection. Again, I was able to customize my presentation to build the unique bond with this audience. Result: referrals to speak for state association conferences. Right message for the right audience.

    William Hung - American IdolWilliam Hung is an emerging voice. The album was unique because it contained inspirational messages in-between some of his songs.
